Introduction & Context

Retort safety valve sizing is a critical process engineering task designed to protect pressure vessels from catastrophic failure due to overpressure. In a typical retort operation, the primary overpressure scenario occurs when a steam supply control valve fails in the fully open position, delivering steam at a rate exceeding the vessel's design capacity. This calculation ensures that the safety relief valve (SRV) is sized to discharge the maximum potential steam inflow, maintaining the vessel pressure within the limits defined by the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (Section VIII, Division 1) and API 520 standards. For detailed guidance on selecting and sizing control valves for liquid service, refer to our control valve sizing for liquid service guide.

Methodology & Formulas

The sizing methodology assumes critical (choked) flow, which occurs when the downstream pressure is sufficiently low relative to the upstream pressure. The effective orifice area is determined using the standard API 520 compressible flow equation for steam.

First, the absolute relieving pressure P₁ is calculated by accounting for the set pressure and the allowable accumulation, a step that is also essential in distillation column pressure relief design.

\[ P_{1} = (P_{\text{set,gauge}} + P_{\text{acc,gauge}}) + P_{\text{atm}} \]

The absolute relieving temperature T is derived from the saturation temperature at the relieving pressure:

\[ T = (T_{\text{sat,Celsius}} + 273.15) \cdot 1.8 \]

The required effective orifice area A is then calculated using the following governing equation:

\[ A = \frac{\dot{m} \sqrt{T \cdot Z}}{C \cdot K_{d} \cdot K_{b} \cdot K_{c} \cdot P_{1} \sqrt{M}} \]

To ensure the validity of the choked flow assumption, the pressure ratio must be evaluated against the critical pressure ratio rc, which is a function of the specific heat ratio k:

\[ r_{c} = \left( \frac{2}{k + 1} \right)^{\frac{k}{k - 1}} \]
Condition Criteria Action
Choked Flow \( \frac{P_{\text{back}}}{P_{1}} < r_{c} \) Use the choked flow formula provided above.
Subcritical Flow \( \frac{P_{\text{back}}}{P_{1}} \geq r_{c} \) Flow is not choked; iterative subcritical equations are required.
Accumulation (Non-Fire) \( P_{\text{acc}} = 0.10 \cdot P_{\text{set}} \) Standard allowance for single valve overpressure protection.

Note: All variables must be converted to consistent units (US Customary) prior to calculation, specifically mass flow in lb/h, pressure in psia, and temperature in °R.
