Introduction & Context
Thermal process steam quality and condensation efficiency are critical parameters in heat exchanger design, particularly when managing phase-change processes across vertical surfaces. This calculation determines the steady-state wall temperature and the resulting overall heat transfer coefficient for a system involving internal liquid flow and external steam condensation.
In Process Engineering, this analysis is essential for sizing condensers, reboilers, and heat recovery units. By balancing the internal convective heat transfer with the external film condensation resistance, engineers can predict the thermal performance of the equipment and ensure that the condensate film remains within the laminar regime, preventing premature transition to turbulent flow which would otherwise alter heat transfer characteristics.
Methodology & Formulas
The calculation follows a coupled heat transfer approach where the internal convective heat transfer coefficient (hi) is balanced against the external condensation coefficient (ho) to solve for the unknown wall temperature (Tw).
1. Internal Convective Heat Transfer
Assuming fully developed laminar flow within the tube, the internal coefficient is derived from the Nusselt number (Nu):
2. External Condensation Correlation
The external coefficient is determined using the Nusselt correlation for vertical surfaces, where the condensation constant (C) is defined as:
3. Energy Balance and Iterative Solution
The wall temperature (Tw) is found by solving the energy balance equation where the heat flux from the steam equals the heat flux into the internal fluid:
This is solved using the Newton-Raphson method, iterating until the convergence of Tw.
4. Overall Heat Transfer Coefficient
Once Tw is determined, the overall heat transfer coefficient (U) is calculated based on the series resistance model:
5. Flow Regime Validation
To ensure the validity of the laminar condensation model, the film Reynolds number (Refilm) is calculated:
| Regime | Condition | Implication |
|---|---|---|
| Laminar Film | Refilm < 1800 | Nusselt correlation is valid; stable heat transfer. |
| Turbulent/Wavy | Refilm ≥ 1800 | Correlation requires correction for turbulence; heat transfer increases. |
