Introduction & Context
In process engineering, distinguishing between Solid-Liquid Extraction (Leaching) and Washing is critical for designing effective separation units. While both operations involve the contact of a solid phase with a liquid phase, their objectives and mass balance strategies differ fundamentally.
Extraction is a process where the primary objective is to recover a valuable solute from a solid matrix into a liquid solvent (the extract). Conversely, Washing is a purification process where the objective is to remove an unwanted impurity from a solid product (the residue) using a wash liquid. Misidentifying these processes leads to incorrect mass balance formulations, as extraction tracks the recovery of a valuable component, while washing tracks the removal of a contaminant.
Methodology & Formulas
The governing principle for both operations is the steady-state component mass balance. The following formulas translate the physical logic into standard engineering notation.
Extraction (Leaching)
The total solute mass entering the system is defined by the product of the feed mass and the solute mass fraction:
\[ m_{\text{solute,in}} = m_{\text{feed}} \cdot x_{\text{feed}} \]The efficiency of the extraction process is quantified by the recovery percentage, representing the ratio of solute mass in the extract to the total solute mass initially present in the feed:
\[ R_{\text{ec}} = \left( \frac{m_{\text{extract,solute}}}{m_{\text{solute,in}}} \right) \cdot 100 \]Washing
The total impurity mass entering the system within the wet cake is defined by the product of the wet cake mass and the impurity mass fraction:
\[ m_{\text{impurity,in}} = m_{\text{cake}} \cdot w_{\text{in}} \]The remaining impurity mass after the washing stage is the difference between the initial impurity and the mass removed by the wash liquid:
\[ m_{\text{impurity,rem}} = m_{\text{impurity,in}} - m_{\text{impurity,removed}} \]The effectiveness of the wash is determined by the fraction of impurity remaining in the final product:
\[ f = \frac{m_{\text{impurity,rem}}}{m_{\text{impurity,in}}} \]| Process Regime | Primary Objective | Key Performance Metric |
|---|---|---|
| Extraction | Recover valuable solute into liquid | Recovery Percentage (\(R_{\text{ec}}\)) |
| Washing | Remove impurity from solid | Fraction Remaining (\(f\)) |
