Calculation Summary

Calculated Chemical Formula: CH₄
Molar Mass / Molecular Weight: 16.043 g/mol
Stoichiometric Conversion Result: --

The molar mass of a substance (often conventionally referred to as molecular mass or molecular weight, though subtle scientific differences exist) constitutes the absolute mass of one mole of that substance. It is expressed standardly in \(\text{g/mol}\) (or equivalents like \(\text{kg/kmol}\)).

The molar mass is calculated mathematically by finding the sum of the individual atomic weights of every constituent element multiplied by its empirical stoichiometric index:

\[ M = \sum (n_i \cdot M_i) \]

As a baseline example, consider Methane (\(\text{CH}_4\)):

\[ \text{M}_{\text{CH}_4} = 1 \cdot \text{M}_{\text{C}} + 4 \cdot \text{M}_{\text{H}} \] \[ \text{M}_{\text{CH}_4} = 1 \cdot 12.011\text{ g/mol} + 4 \cdot 1.008\text{ g/mol} = 16.043\text{ g/mol} \]

Please find below our verified reference table of common compounds and their molecular weights. Values have been compiled from reliable IUPAC and thermodynamic databases. You may use the built-in search filters or typical Ctrl+F browser commands to locate specific chemical families.

💡 Plant Engineering Molar Mass Guidelines

  • Standard Air Average Weight: For sizing compressors and calculating pipeline pressure drops, standard dry air molecular weight is assumed as 28.966 g/mol.
  • Ideal Gas Calculations: Ensure units consistency. Standard gas constant \(R = 8.314\text{ J/(mol}\cdot\text{K)}\) maps to pressure in \(\text{Pa}\) and volume in \(\text{m}^3\). Molar mass converts mass rates directly to volumetric flow rates at actual conditions.
  • Compressibility Warning: Real-gas behavior diverges significantly from ideal gas behavior near saturation lines. Always apply compressibility factors (\(Z\)) when computing the actual physical density (\(\rho\)) of high-pressure process gases.
